Synopsis

The comedy where everyone gets caught in the act.

Hired to helm an Americanized take on a British play, director Lloyd Fellowes does his best to control an eccentric group of stage actors. With a star actress quickly passing her prime, a male lead with no confidence, and a bit actor that's rarely sober, chaos ensues in the lead up to a Broadway premiere.

I would love to see a stage production of this because while this movie was full of insane chaos, I imagine seeing this live would have even higher stakes. The physical comedy is such a blast - there is so much going on at once that it’s easy to get lost. I love that even when I got lost in all of the moving parts, the story itself never felt lost. Every movement, every line was very intricately done.

And GOD don’t forget the SARDINES!

my god.. now THIS is comedy ❗️ this is the exact kind of comedy i respond to. it's witty, it's clever, it's all about the little intricacies that are adding up to a whole, and everyone playing their part perfectly.i haven't had this good of a time watching a comedy maybe ever.

What makes this, besides the inspired cast (Ritter and Reeves are particular riots), is how it plays the scalating chaos of three act variations on the same act structure against Bogdanovich laidback style, most very controlled long takes. The world is increasing taken by chaos, but the images keep an integrity that gives such chaos a different meaning. A movie about finding pleasure at work no matter the madness involved. The interplay of repetition and how it relates to the craft of putting a play is put to great use as well. The one mistake is Caine's offscreen narration which I assume was add to the movie, it brings an extra showbizz sentimentality that is better expressed in the choreography of performances. Otherwise, this is a formal triumph and a very funny movie.

We used to have movies about crazy people putting on a show. We used to have actors who specialized in funny voices and accents. We used to have actors who built a whole career out of falling down.

Peter Bogdanovich directs a stellar cast of actors playing a group of famous actors trying to keep a play afloat as their personal and professional life crumbles down.

While it takes a while to get used to the humor and everything happening on screen as almost right from the get-go the movie is a running a thousand miles per hour, its almost impossible to not have a blast as we see everyone from iconic comedians like Carol Burnett, Julia Hagerty and John Ritter to much serious actors such as Michael Caine all flexing their comedy chops. Even the OG Superman, Christopher Reeves, got a few laughs out of me. The movie does a great job balancing the physical with the…

I was really tired while watching Noises Off..., so I’m not sure if I liked it as much as I normally would have, but I still thought it was good. The film is a lot of fun—fast-paced, chaotic, and full of cleverly staged comedic mishaps. It’s definitely goofy, but in a way that works because of its sharp timing and strong performances. The cast is stacked, and it was especially nice to see Christopher Reeve. My mom was a big fan of his when she was little, so watching this together as a watch party made it even more enjoyable. She thoroughly loved it from what she said.

The way the film escalates its comedic set pieces is impressive, with…

I watched this *hundreds* of times when I was younger and thought it was zany, dumb fun, but revisiting now it occurs to me what an absolute master class this is in comic timing, editing, and composition. THE BLOCKING MASTERY. Every cast member shines, but my god. John. RITTER. 🤌🤌🤌

If you want to make comedies, watch this. Study this. I need to do a Bogdonavich deep dive.

I think I’m officially a Bogstanovich at this point, the man can do no wrong.

Im not a Bogdanovich fan, but this is my fave of his so far. I love how much he loved John Ritter! This reminded me alot of the ski lodge episode of Frasier. And who doesnt love a good shut door and misunderstandings trope. But the beginning is super boring and theatre comedy is a hit or miss. Bonus points though for Reeves, Burnett, and Caine. John really worked with everyone.

”There is something funny going on here”

This is like watching a frantic juggling act that just gets crazier and crazier... and just when you think it can't get any crazier out come the chainsaws!

But nothing could've prepared us for the final horror... Cleveland.

The near-speechless backstage chaos during the Miami Beach performance is a masterwork of comedy. The evolution of the performances is astounding. Christopher Reeves is a godsend casting. A complete riot.
